Flight day

Balloons UK Ltd

When Do We Fly?

Flight dayOur hot air balloon rides take place throughout the whole year, and we fly on every day that the weather conditions are suitable. A frosty winter's morning can be just as stunning as a warm summer evening in July!

Flights take place at two times of the day, either early in the morning, or a couple of hours before sunset. The actual times simply vary month by month in accordance with sunrise and sunset - in essence we aim to fly about an hour after sunrise, and then about two hours before sunset. It is at these times that the atmospheric conditions are most suitable for ballooning.

Weather Conditions

As you can imagine, ballooning requires ideal weather conditions, with light winds and no rain, low cloud, fog or storms. So, at a certain time prior to your flight, you will telephone our 'Flightline' recorded message and discover whether the flight is proceeding as planned.

Of course, if the flight is cancelled due to poor weather, you simply book another date at your convenience and try again. We typically fly 4500 passengers each year and thousands of passengers fly at their first try, with the vast majority catching a good day within a few attempts.

The Flight Itself ( 1 to 1 ½ hours)

Whether you choose a morning or an evening flight, floating gracefully out of The Trentham Estate and over the Staffordshire, Cheshire, Shropshire or even Derbyshire countryside in the Trentham Balloon is just magical, and makes an ideal platform for photography. The flight will last for between 60 and 90 minutes, giving you plenty of time to take photos, soak up the views and chat with your pilot. The altitude at which we cruise varies from treetop height to many thousands of feet, and is the one aspect over which we have total control. From the time that we greet you at the launch site to the time that we return you to your cars after landing, you will need to allow about 4 hours for the whole experience. One of the most interesting features of ballooning is drifting with the wind; nobody knows exactly where the breeze will take us. Whilst we are on our ‘magical mystery tour’ the ground crew are following the balloon in Land Rovers by road and in radio contact with the pilot.

Flight CertificateLanding

When the time comes, your pilot will decide on a suitable landing site and bring you back to earth. Once the balloon has landed the ground crew will find the land owner, gain permission to come in to the field where the balloon will be loaded onto the trailer, and we will then return you to Trentham to be reunited with friends and relatives who may have been waiting for you, keen to hear all about your trip. Your balloon ride experience won't end just yet because back at the launce site you will be presented with a personalised flight certificate signed by your pilot before bidding farewell.

What Should I Wear?

Comfortable outdoor clothing suitable for the time of year. Passengers are always surprised by how warm they feel whilst up in the air; it really is no colder than on the ground, so there's no need to come dressed for the arctic! We do recommend sensible outdoor footwear, and no high heels or flip flops/sandals. Even in summer, fields can be wet with dew in the mornings, and so waterproof footwear is ideal.

Meeting At Trentham

When you arrive at the meeting point you will be greeted by a member of our crew and given full instructions & information about what to do next. We will then proceed to the launch field where the crew (you can help if you wish) will prepare the balloon for inflation. Once this is done your pilot will give all passengers a Full Safety Briefing (this is a mandatory requirement under the CAA Air Navigation Order). Once safety is taken care of the inflation begins and within 10 to 15 minutes your pilot will be inviting you to climb aboard. Within no time at all your balloon ride begins and we are leaving the ground to the cheers and waves from friends and family, as you set off on your adventure!

What Will You See?

Balloon Trips from this amazing site can take you over the some of the most beautiful Staffordshire, Cheshire, Shropshire and Derbyshire countryside with breathtaking views of the Staffordshire Moors, Shropshire Hills, Cheshire Plains & the Peak District and what’s more you will be flying in the latest Trentham hot air balloon specifically designed for your comfort and enjoyment.

We might drift across to Leek or Cheadle, or perhaps travel the opposite way, out towards Stafford and Eccleshall. We might be peering down at the Britannia Stadium, or skimming the treetops of the Maer Hills. Quite simply, wherever the wind takes us, you will find that the whole world takes on a very different perspective when veiwed from high above!

The Launch Site

The Trentham Estate.

view over TrenthamOur balloons launch from The Trentham Estate. Most people will remember this site as Trentham Gardens. The site has been undergoing extensive re-development and at the completion of the 3rd phase of development Trentham has reverted to its historic name of The Trentham Estate.

The former Trentham Gardens has been renamed and taken its historic name from the Duke of Sutherland era of The Trentham Estate. Over the past 5 years the 750 acre site has been going through a £100 million pound re-generation programme and has been the site of an amazing renaissance. The owners, St Modwen Development, have sympathetically restored the old and cleverly integrated the modern. The estate is now one of the top visitor attractions for Staffordshire, Cheshire, Shropshire and the Midlands. From the Award Winning Italian Gardens to the ‘Scandinavian style’ shopping mall, monkey forest, garden centre, outdoor activities plus much much more.
